Tyler’s job is all about helping students

Tyler’s job is all about helping students

This year there have been many changes to the faculty and staff; among the change is the addition of Jessie Tyler a new School Community Resource Specialist (SCRS).

Her job entails a lot of components focused on helping students.

“I work with students and their families to make sure a student can be successful. I provide resources for mental health, employment, housing and basic needs,” Tyler said.

This is her first year at North Kansas City but not her first year working in this field.

“This is my second year as an SCRS and I’ve worked in social services for eight years,” Tyler said.

Never working in a high school may be a very different environment, but Tyler is ecstatic.

“I wanted to work at a high school because working with teens is fun for me and also I wanted to coach. I love Northtown, in particular because it’s part of a great community and there are amazing students and staff here,” Tyler said.

Tyler is a first time assistant softball and girls’ basketball coach for the Hornets.

Even though working with teens can be fun, of course there are going to be difficulties.

“Getting students and families to follow through, sometimes I know of a very helpful resource but I can’t get them to take advantage of it,” Tyler said.

Tyler offers great resources as a counselor and friend in times of struggle.

“Come visit me with any issue you’re having. Sometimes situations go from kind of tough to awful if you don’t let someone know early enough,” Tyler said.

Outside of NKCHS, Tyler participates in a variety of activities.

“I play a lot of slow pitch softball. I’m also very active in my sorority and I serve as our Alumnae Association President,” Tyler said.

Whether it’s on the field or in the office, Tyler’s resources are making a great contribution to the community.
