It was a peaceful afternoon before shots rang out at a Kansas Jewish Community center on Sunday, April 13.

The shooter, Frazier Glenn Miller, was a former head dragon of a local branch of the Klu Klux Klan. As he was carried away, Miller ranted at the police and yelled,”Heil Hitler!”

The gunman in all shot at five people, but missed two, police report he had a shotgun as well as a handgun and are looking into reports of an assault rifle.

Two of the victims were shot while inside their car at the community center, 5801 W. 115th St. One of them, William Lewis Coropon, died on the scene and his fourteen year-old grandson, Reat Griffin Underwood, died later at Overland Park Regional Medical Center. The third victim, who was not publicly identified Sunday night was shot and killed in the parking lot of the Village Shalom senior living facility at 5500 W.123rd St.

Many departments helped with the investigation of this horrible crime by Sunday morning the Federal Bureau of Investigation had joined the investigation along with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms and other Agencies. A dispatcher with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department of southwest Missouri where Miller lives said the agency was assisting the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department and FBI in an investigation Sunday night.

The fact that he was a former leader of the KKK or Klu Klux Klan Leads to the question of if this is how Jews are treated should they be fearing for their lives in a country where freedom is supposed to reign supreme is this an act of aggression against Jews, a hate crime? Or will this be used as a stepping-stone for gun rights activists? The shootings shook the Kansas City area Jewish community and rightfully so for in the first amendment they have freedom of religion and if this is how they are treated in our country, how can we call ourselves a country of freedom and liberty for all?

President Obama pledged the full support of the federal government. According to The Kansas City Star, President Obama called the tragedy “heartbreaking” and says his team will make sure law enforcement has “the necessary resources to support the ongoing investigation.”

Meanwhile the victims’ families, especially Reat Underwood, will be missed by his friends and family. Underwood was a common presence in the political and band circles at his school and was a popular student, but was struck down in the prime of his youth.

Miller is in police custody and has been charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder.
