The North Kansas City Varsity football team is buzzing its way through the hive and taking down all the teams in the way. With a win against battle high school (56-22) on Aug. 29, Park Hill (69-51) on Sep. 5, Excelsior Springs (48-10) on Sep. 12, and St. Joe Central (58-34) on Sep. 19.
Senior Romie Still said the new transfers such as Mehki Fields, Aaron Coleman and Kevin Addison brought it all together for the team.
“Feels like you’re fighting for something more when you’re fighting for the person next to you and your head coach” Still explained.

Still added that “Coach Joiner has been building up the past year and got it locked in”.
Still, defensive line, said it’s an awesome experience getting to play right next to his younger brother Finnwick Still and getting coached by Karl Zubeck who has put a lot of work into them.
“Just like any other family, we grow together, work together and spend a lot of time together.”
Seniors Ray Bolen, linebacker, and Curtis Ligon, receiver, said that it’s important to be a family because everyone plays better, when we play unlike a family, we play the weakest level of football. Bolen reflected on what it meant to be a family.
“All my brothers go out on Friday nights and not just then but every day, go out and fight for me and everyone else on the team,” he said.

Senior Jhamari Vickers, corner, said the team did a lot of things to get prepared, getting speed right, and even eye and mental discipline right. Vickers also said that bringing the new transfers “added a lot of good things to the team that last year didn’t bring, such as the atmosphere being more like a family, than just a team”.
Vickers also reflected on how the season is “Sad, going to miss the experience. I’ve enjoyed it while it lasted”.
The North Kansas City Hornets, football isn’t about winning games, it’s about building a brotherhood that lasts long after the Friday night lights go out.
“Being a family connects you with so many people that you wouldn’t have expected”, said Curtis Ligon. “Even though they’re not blood related, they’re still brothers” Zubeck) said.
