While most students were spending their summer at the pool relaxing with friends, six other students spent every day in the recording studio, preparing to release their new mixtape by the first day of school.
On Aug. 16, Young Mac Boys, YMB, released a CD to the student body. At first the CD cost five dollars but soon the group decided to hand the CD out for free because it would help spread their music faster.
Though according to many students, their music was already everyone’s current discussion.
“I learned a lot about YMB over Facebook with their demo songs, and then throughout the summer I learned more and more about them. I couldn’t wait til school started to get their CD,” junior Kyaunna Robinson said.
Songs such as “Girl Gon Twerk,” “Big Chain,” “I Wanna Freak,” “Let It Wiggle,” and “Shut the Club Down,“ ring through students’ headphones.
The CD has 18 original songs featuring a little bit of R&B, Hip Hop and Rap. Since the release of YMB’s CD, many students ride to school listening to their favorite songs.
“It is worth all the hype. Every song on that CD is raw. Like when we went to the football game, we turned the volume up all the way, and guys outside of the car were dancing. It just has that beat you can’t help but dance too,” senior Ja’kyra Shelton said.
YMB consist of five males, senior Chris Petit, juniors Shaq Boone, Trey Vandernt, Tyler McCray, Julian Terrada, and one female, junior Alexis Johnson. The group was created in the beginning of the summer by Boone.
“I was tired of being a single rapper so I asked Julian to be in it. Then Julian asked Trigga, and he asked Chris. And Alexis and Tyler were already in it,“ Boone said.
The group didn’t rest over the summer. YMB was consistently writing lyrics and recording their songs in the studio. When they weren’t writing or recording, they were thinking about writing and recording.
“It was YMB all day every day throughout the summer. We are more than dedicated to make our dream of becoming big into reality. We are not going to give up at all,” Terrada said.
Their dedication can be shown through their music. YMB makes their music on their own. They write the lyrics, make the back round beats, and they record in the studio at Boone’s house.
Though the group is new, YMB says they are here to stay and they are serious about producing music.
YMB has already left their impression on Northtown. Students cannot stop listening to their music.
“At first when I heard about them, I didn’t think they were serious, I thought it was just a hobby or something. But when I got their mixtape and started listing to it, I feel like they actually can become something. I listen to a least one song every day. It just has that beat that makes you want to dance and it extremely catchy,” senior Tyler Earle said.
The feedback blew the boys away. Each member of YMB is really impressed and pleased with how well their friends took to their music.
“It gives us confidence to continue. We just want to make something hot that people will like and dance to. Knowing that everyone listens to it and hearing people quote our lyrics make me feel like it will all work out. We are going to make it,” Petit said.
Since the release of their mixtape, the boys have continued to make music. They plan to release their CD around Christmas time, but until then YMB has put a couple new songs on Facebook, such as “We Taking Off” and “It’s A Party Life.”
With such a great outcome, many ask where YMB is going to go from here. They smile and all agree they dream of making it big, but throughout it all they want to stay together as a family.
