Recently it seems that the rate of young people, who are gay, committing suicide has sky rocketed. Nine teens have killed themselves in large part, if not totally, because of anti-gay bullying.
One boy, Corey Jackson, hanged himself on Oct. 19, only a day before Oct. 20, a day where people were to wear purple in memory of the teens and bring attention to the bigotry.
All the stories are tragic, any suicide story is and the simple fact that so many have occurred so close together all over the country is devastating.
Obviously, something is wrong, if all over the country this happening. Bullying has always existed in one form or another and it is always to single out those who are different. Homosexuality is just another way to single people out.
Yet, students begin to learn singling people out for certain things is not right. It seems that kids are always taught, ‘just because someone looks different doesn’t mean you can make fun of them.’ So now shouldn’t kids be taught that just because someone is attracted to someone of the same sex doesn’t mean they can make fun of them?
They aren’t taught this, or at least not until they are older. I know it wasn’t until I was in middle school that my sister brought up to me that being gay wasn’t a bad thing, and that I should not use those terms in a dergatory way like some of my classmates were.
In fact mentioning the word gay, lesbian, or homosexual seems to be completely taboo in front of younger children. They are treated almost like curse words in a lot of cases, but why? They are just to describe people.
Some people are homosexual; while some might not agree with it morally, the fact is this is the way some people are and that is not going to change. Therefore society needs to find a way to accept this and show to children that they also need to accept it.
Children should be taught early on about homosexuality and then at least some intolerance would drop if there could be a greater understanding earlier on.
No matter where people stand on the matter of homosexuality, it should be unanimous that any suicide is a horrible thing, especially when the victims are young people with so much life left to live and therefore people should be doing everything in their power to bring this kind of bullying to some sort of an end.
