Letter to the Editor: Westboro is a congregation of hate

In 2006, a young Marine of the United States named Matthew Snyder gave his life defending our country in Iraq.

The funeral was planned to happen soon after the shocking news was given to his loving family in his home city of Westminster, Maryland.

Sadly, from anyone’s point of view, death is the downside to any war.

But this must exclude the Westboro “Church” in Topeka, Kansas, who, led by Fred Phelps, protested Matthew’s funeral because of the rumor that his sexual orientation was of the same gender.

Phelps claims they have the ‘right’ to express “God’s hate” towards homosexuals and Americans.

The Westboro church appeared at Matthew Snyder’s funeral to “protest” Snyder’s assumed sexuality with neon colored posters and signs that said things like “GOD HATES FAGS” and “GOD HATES AMERICA” and others like “STOP SINNING HOMOS.”

if these people had ever read the Bible, they would know that YHWH (pronounced YA-WAY), a personal name of God, doesn’t hate the sinner. He hates the sin that the people have committed or commits.

In both Old and New Testament, love is an abundant word from God. Nowhere has it ever been written in the Bible that God hates.

In fact it’s the exact opposite: 1 John 4:8 – “Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” Also, Psalms 147:3- “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”

This is the exact opposite of what the Westboro “Church” claims against sinners.

Tell me Westboro; give me a Scripture where God hates.

Everyone in this congregation has a misconception of what hate and wrath are. Hate in the Bible is murder, and wrath is built of judgment of sin.

Only God can judge a person, because all of us have sinned and have gone against God.

Westboro members are not Christian; they’re arrogant hypocrites who give a bad name to Christians.

As being an evangelist, reaching to another person with a bridge from the Holy Spirit is not formed from hate.

With jurisdiction of American law, Albert Snyder, Matthew’s father, took legal actions against Westboro Church and Phelps and charged them with hate crime. Westboro’s defense is a misuse of the free speech right.

It soon will be dealt within the Supreme Court. As if anyone should think, the Supreme Court should rule in favor of Snyder. People need the government to back them up especially when it deals with problems like Westboro.

If you have a problem with the government, protest the government, not a funeral. It’s common sense.
