New Scholar Bowl coach Randy Jackson and his team have already started the team out well this year at their Oct. 16 tournament.
“We were a little rusty coming back from summer but we still did well. We are 8-2. Most of our wins were in the second bracket though, but it’s still good,” junior Joel O’Roney said.
For those unfamiliar to what Scholar Bowl is, it is a team of 10 students who participate in tournaments against other teams, competing to see who can answer the most questions correctly. Each question can be from a wide variety of subject areas.
“It is kind of like jeopardy on speed,” Jackson said.
Before each tournament, Scholar Bowl gets together and starts studying for their next win and it can be a lot of work, but that doesn’t bother Roney.
“I’m kind of a nerd, so I like learning new things,” Roney said.
Being the new coach of the team can be challenging at times for Jackson, especially when the old coach, Larry Allen, led the teams to so many victories. Plus Jackson is already busy being the only theatre teacher and in charge of Leadership, but he says that he really likes Scholar Bowl.
“I only feel guilty that I can’t spend as much time on it as I want,” Jackson said.
Overall, the team has done their best so far, and they have the results to prove it, but they are already planning to improve for the next tournament.
Their first tournament was not only a confidence booster after losing their old coach and one of their best players, but also gave them a start to build on.
“Last time went pretty well and I was excited, but it pointed out a lot of stuff we needed to work on,” Jackson said.
The team is excited to be back for another year and their fingers are itching to hit that buzzer again for more wins.
