Seth Rogen returns to the movies as the Green Hornet, a masked vigilante who tries to fight crimes with his partner Kato.
Rogen also plays the role of Britt Reid, the spoiled, party animal son of the multi-billionaire media mogul James Reid, played by Tom Wilkinson.
Britt didn’t have a good relationship with his father because James has always been pushing him to make something of himself.
When James Reid dies due to an allergic reaction from a bee sting, Britt inherits his dad’s empire and becomes overwhelmed with what to do with his life.
This is where Britt meets Kato, played by the music sensation Jay Chou.
Kato is James’ mechanic, a martial arts and explosives expert and an all-round “human Swiss Army knife.”
Discovering Kato’s abilities, the two set out for a vandalism that sprouts into the beginning of the Green Hornet.
While Britt and Kato are busy “saving the world,” Cameron Diaz, plays the smarter-than-she-looks secretary, who predicts the Green Hornet and Kato’s next agenda. She shows up periodically in the movie but nothing really interesting about her.
As Britt and Kato take down the city one piece at a time, they get the attention of the city’s crime boss, Chudnofsky, who is played by Christopher Waltz. Waltz did a good job of playing as the antagonist who is more concerned about fashion than profit.
There are a lot of fighting scenes in the movie, but the movie just sort of sits there, producing only sporadic laughs to go with its often sloppy action sequences.
Thanks to the 3D effects added on the actions scenes, the movie was taken up a notch from typical poorly directed action scenes.
One of the tricks used to amp the action scenes is the so called “Kato-vision” where it allows the viewer to see a display of upcoming actions using slow and stop motion, and highlights of weapons and threats.
This movie is mostly action and broadly comic. If you’re looking for a time-killing movie, this movie is for you.
It’s not too bad because it has cool visual effects, martial arts action, car chases, James Bond style gadgets and some funny scenes that keep you awake during the movie.
Overall, the Green Hornet is an admirable yet underwhelming attempt in trying to do something different.
