For the third year in a row, the varsity cheerleading squad has found a fun and easy way to raise money and help younger kids with their cheerleading skills.
On Saturday, Jan. 22, the squad raised $300 holding a cheer camp at the school for K-eighth grade students.
At the camp, the girls learned how to cheer and a short routine to show their parents at the end of the camp and also perform during the varsity boys basketball game on Jan. 28.
“It was fun making up routines and working with them. They always get so excited,” junior Destiny Jones said.
The camp had a total of 14 kids show up: five middle schoolers and nine elementary students.
The cost of the camp was $30 per
girl, which covered a t-shirt, signed poster, and snacks.
“It went great. We had a good group of girls who stayed focused and were ready to cheer. The girls always enjoy doing this camp. It’s a way to have fun and show girls how it will be during high school,” coach Colette Clemens said.
The girls wanted to focus on teaching the kids how to jump, do motions, dance, stunt and cheer.
The girls divided up in two groups, younger and older kids, and taught each group something different.
At the end, they all came together to teach them a familiar North Kansas City cheer.
“I love teaching the little girls to cheer. My favorite part of the clinic was trying new stunts with the big kids,” Jones said.
