Wes Craven gave horror film fans “Scream” 15 years ago.
Although the movie only made $6 million in its first weekend, the franchise went on to add three more movies and earn over half a billion dollars worldwide.
“Scream” is a tongue-in-cheek type of film that focuses on cliché aspects of the horror industry while still managing to be a respectable horror flick.
On April 15, Wes Craven is set to release “Scream 4”, 11 years after the last movie.
Fans are fortunate that this movie is even being released because the script was constantly being rewritten to prevent a horror flop.
The movie features new Hollywood talent like Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere and Lucy Hale, while it also brings back veterans like Courtney Cox and David Arquette.
Scream is about a masked serial killer that terrorizes his victims with antagonizing phone calls and movie references.
Unlike other horror movie franchises like “Halloween” and “Texas Chainsaw Massacre”, the murderer has never been identified so the suspense is never ending.
Fans are hoping for a dramatic reveal to end the speculation or even a fifth movie to extend the success.
In the movie the killer calls unsuspecting people and asks them questions about horror movies, if they answer wrong he attacks them.
With the first attack the girl answers wrong and he kills her boyfriend, then kills her for refusing to answer more questions.
The town of Woodboros, California is on edge that the killer, referred to as Ghostface, will strike again.
Nobody can be trusted and everyone is suspected.
That’s what makes these movies so good; they have managed to keep the audience guessing for 15 years.
The movie makes references to movies like “Friday the 13“ and “Halloween” and even the director Wes Craven who also directed “A Nightmare on Elm Street.”
Because the town knows about this brutal killer they have 3 rules to survival.
1. You can’t have sex, since only virgins can outsmart the killer in the end.
2. You can’t drink or do drugs
3. Don’t ever say “I’ll be right back.”
These rules are delivered in the begining to prevent obvious deaths.
“Scream” does a excellent job of making fun of the horror industry while also being a part of it.
Each addition to the franchise offers new victims and new reasons for their deaths while also evolving and adapting with some of the same .
More recently Craven announced that a “Scream 5” concept has been tossed around and could supposidly star Lindsey Lohan.
“Scream” has become a household name.
Little kids know the famous mask from Halloween stores and ads while teenagers probably watched it on Fox or E! and adults remember it from the theaters.
Each year a new horror remake is released, so it’s nice to see continuation of a horror franchise that’s not completely ridiculous.
Although the movie doesn’t come out until this Friday, I can already tell it won’t disapoint die-hard “Scream” fans.
So get ready to scream because this movie looks good and should not be missed by anyone who calls themselves a horror fan.
