Sneak peek to Winter Sports

Winter sports are at it again, starting up with boys and girls’ basketball, and winter guard. The Buzz asked Northtown’s coaches how they think this year will go, and how they think last year went.

Northtown’s girl’s basketball coach Jeffery Lacy had a few things to say about the team,

“The Girls had a great season last year. [We] worked really hard to get a chance to have success and it paid off…This season should go well but we could have a learning curve. We lost 3 very talented starters. I am curious to see what kind of depth we will have. Grades and behavior in the classroom could be a determining factor to our depth those who do those two things well should get their shot.”

Lacy also had a bit to say about what he’s excited about this year,

“We [return 4 players] with varsity experience and I can say that all 4 have improved though out the off season. [Senior] Maggie Brooks will step into a new role offensively and I am excited to see where that takes her. Selena Salas will be relied on to score more this year as well. [Senior] Aries Washington returns from ankle surgery and looks more explosive than ever. I am also excited to see which player, beyond those 4, can step up and take the lead for that 5th spot.”

It’s safe to say, this season, girl’s basketball is going to be fired up, with pressure, and hard work.

Northtown’s winter guard is up and growing. It starred its first year, last year with the show “Slow Me Down” with only a few new members to add to the team, but that’s no slowing down this team. The winter guard team gained a new coach this year. Previous choreographer for the color guard and winter guard David Harris, stepped up to coach and choreographer. Coach Harris elaborates on how the team did last year,

“I expect this year to go really well. We have a lot of new strategies in place that will help us grow and develop a strong show. We have already won 1st place twice and I expect the pattern to continue…Last year was a little rocky. The process of transitioning between coaches is always rough. We made a lot of progress last year but this year we will really begin to shine.” There is some high hopes for this year’s winter guard, for sure.

The Buzz also checked into the JV’s basketball coach, Corey McCune. He says, “Everyone is always optimistic at the beginning of the year.  We have some younger players that we think will be able to step right in and be valuable assets to the team.  If we work hard, we should be just fine.” Coach McCune is ready for this year’s team to start.

Last year’s team was a  “ senior dominated team” says McCune. “And it was nice to see that several of them moved on to play college basketball.  Hopefully this year’s crop can do the same.”

McCune is excited to work with the guys that have been in the program. I [like to] see how their game has developed throughout the summer and early fall.”

Northtown’s winter sports teams show hard work and dedication, while balancing schoolwork with a social life; but when it all comes down to it, our teams bleed purple. Go hornets!
