Treble Choir

It is about that time again where the treble choir girls perform at the capitol. The treble choir girls go sing in Jefferson City every year, but most students still have no idea why.

The capital building in Jefferson City has four floors. At the center of the building, there is a dome where all the floors open up and connect through a hole in the floor and ceiling. This makes it possible for everyone in the building to hear what the students are singing.

“It’s a historical site that every citizen should see. It is the finest place in Missouri, acoustic wise, to sing in,” says choir teacher Mike Shirley.

The capitol building is three hours away by bus. All the girls catch up on their sleep and keep themselves busy during this time. Once there, the girls drink in the sights around them and excitedly head inside the building.

First the treble choir girls get to tour the building.

They see the museum inside filled with different things ranging from old coins to pioneer tents and bags.

Around noon, every girl puts on her white robe and purple sash. This outfit choice is also pracitcally tradition due to the fact they wear it evey year.

Looking uniform and professional, the girls go to the grand stairs and sing up to the dome.

The dome makes the girls’ voices echo to every room in the capitol so even if people are busy working and can’t come out of their room, they can still enjoy the songs that the girls sing.

Afterwards, the girls go to Columbia mall to eat lunch and shop. This year, a few Treble Choir girls sang in the middle of the mall for the few people that were around to hear.

Treble choir’s trip to the capitol is practically tradition since they go every year.

Shirley said,” It gives [the students] an opportunity to sing to different people around the state.”

Many of the girls who have decided to stay in treble choir for more than one year went to Jefferson City last year as well as this year..

Last year, Shirley decided to not have the girls sing on the stairs the entire time but to stand around the piano directly below the dome.

“Last year was really interesting because when we got there, there was a conference going on and we even met the governor,” said senior Danielle Preciado.

For the girls that decide to stay in Treble choir again and for the new girls entering in to Treble Choir, they look forward to making new memories at Jefferson City next year.
