Band Review: 5 Seconds of Summer

Making it big in the music industry isn’t always easy, but for Australian band 5 Seconds of Summer, it seemed to happen over night.

The band began with Luke Hemmings (lead vocals and guitar), Calum Hood (bass guitar and vocals), and Michael Clifford (lead guitar and vocals) posting various cover videos of popular songs on Luke`s YouTube channel. In December 2011, they added Ashton Irwin to the line-up as their drummer.

Their influences include Blink-182, All Time Low, Good Charlotte, Boys Like Girls, and Busted.

The band attracted interest from major music labels and publishers, and signed a deal Sony ATV Music Publishing. Their only promotion was Twitter and Facebook.

Despite this, their first EP, Unplugged, reached number 3 on the iTunes chart in Australia. Following this, they began to gain international fans when Louis Tomlinson of One Direction tweeted out the link to their song “Gotta Get Out.”

After releasing their first single, “Out of my Limit,” Niall Horan, also of One Direction, tweeted the link.

Since then, 5 Seconds of Summer have been the opening act for Hot Chelle Rae`s “Whatever World Tour” and One Direction`s “Take Me Home” tour. The band has also headlined 8 of their own tours, playing shows in North America and all over Europe.

In March 2014, following the release of their latest single, “She Looks So Perfect,” it was announced through an online livestream that the band would once again support One Direction on their upcoming Wherever We Are world tour.

On April 9, their She Looks So Perfect EP was released, debuting at number 2 on the Billboard 200 music chart.

5 Seconds of Summer has nearly 3 million followers on twitter, despite having not released an album yet. Though, fans no longer have to worry about an album. On May 13, the preorder for the album went on iTunes, and it was announced that the album, titled 5 Seconds of Summer, would be released on the 27 of June, 2014.

The album features collaborations with John Feldmann (All Time Low, Good Charlotte, Boys Like Girls), Jake Sinclair (Fall Out Boy, Pink), Steve Robson of Busted, and The Madden Brothers from Good Charlotte.

The band will make their United States television debut at the Billboard Music Awards, on May 18.
