Here at Northtown we have aspiring musicians. On my quest to find the artists hidden within these walls I found two to put on the spot, sophomores Miles Martinez and Linus Cathcart. These two are currently in the music industry making and producing music and, in my quest, I’m hoping to find many more. Whether you are or aren’t in the music industry, if you have been inspired, if you think you play well in orchestra or sing well in choir, I am interested. Contact me via email: [email protected]
Who is inspired?
Martinez and Cathcart are both currently pursuing they’re passion, Martinez being an artist by the name of Miles M. and Cathcart being a co-founder of Harold records.
What inspired them?
Martinez was inspired by making “stupid songs in the eighth grade,” that then “evolved into something I wanted to do more.”
Cathcart on the other hand was inspired by his father taking him backstage at concerts as well as being in a band.
“In middle school I was in a band. It was horrible. – [and] I could maybe start a record label if we ever made music and we didn’t, [which] was probably for the best” he said.
What do they do?
Cathcart says,
“I just EQ the music, reach out to clients and put it out there.”
Martinez writes his songs and sings them, and says it is a hard and long process.
“Producing can be really annoying if I don’t have, like, a certain feeling about something,” Martinez said, “I need to get, like, really centered around something, or else I can’t make a good song.”
Cathcart also agrees on it not being easy, but for different reasons.
“Making the music is one of the easier parts. – [but] You have to EQ it. You have to do ad campaigns, which can end up even being costly and very time consuming.”
Even though the process is hard, Cathcart believes in the process.
“But in the end, it’s definitely worth it.” Cathcart said.
Cathcart takes pride in every aspect of his aspirations.
“The last thing we did, we did a small vinyl run. And I was very proud of it.” He said.
Cathcart says he doesn’t play often, but it’s not so much about that.
“But I just loved that not only do we make this but it’s actually, I can, I have a physical copy of it.”
Martinez agrees and not only takes pride in his work, he likes it, at least some of it.
“Yeah, some of the stuff isn’t the greatest, but there’s some songs that I definitely like, and I feel like it’s just, like, a great feeling when you like, finish a song you really like and you listen to it.”
Whether you were in a band in the eighth grade or backstage with your father, a little bit of inspiration can go a long way.
