“I felt excited and kind of awkward because I didn’t know what to do,” Drake said.
Drake not only received the 200,000 hot dog, but also prizes like candy, and gift cards to Kelso’s, Chapel’s, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, and Wal-Mart.
“I’ve never been to Chapel’s before, but now I guess would be a good time to try it,” Drake said.
Drake, as well as up to 1,000 other students, attend the First Christian Church on a regular basis in order to take hold of the opportunity for free hot dogs.
“First Christian Church serves 900 to 1000 students lunch every Wednesday,” FCC member, Ellen Rucker said.
For seven years now, students and other local individuals have been attending the First Christian Church every Wednesday for free hot dogs, a choice of chips and pop.
In 2004, Dennis Kenslow and his wife started the program with their own money, which is now funded through the church and foundations and ran by 25 other weekly volunteers.
So if you’re feeling hungry next Wednesday, stop by the hot dog church for a hot dog, all it costs is a simple please and thank you.
Also keep in touch with the senior theory of knowledge class for updates on giving back to the hot dog church.
The class plans to make a huge thank you poster with students’ signatures.
